How to Use Mould-Resistant Drywall

As building professionals, ensuring the longevity and durability of your projects is paramount. Mould can be an unwelcome challenge in home and building construction and renovation. It can spread quickly, causing structural damage and health concerns. That’s why mould-resistant drywall has become a go-to solution in areas prone to moisture. Keep reading to find out more about mould-resistant drywall and when it should be used to protect your builds and give your clients peace of mind.

What is Mould-Resistant Drywall?

Mould and moisture-resistant drywall is specially engineered to inhibit mould growth. It typically features a treated gypsum core containing additives that resist mould spores, water-resistant facing paper, and enhanced durability compared to standard drywall. While more expensive than regular drywall, it’s worth the investment in high-humidity or moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

How Do You Install Mould-Resistant Drywall?

Installing mould-resistant drywall follows a similar procedure to standard drywall. Simply measure, score, snap, and cut sheets to size as you normally would, then fasten them to the studs. After hanging, the joints need taping, and the fastener holes require mud. However, we recommend using a fibreglass mesh tape for joints wherever possible, as mould can latch onto the organic material of paper tape.

Where Should I Use Mould-Resistant Drywall?

As we’ve mentioned, mould-resistant drywall is best suited for areas prone to high moisture or humidity from appliances, fixtures, or environmental factors. Warm, dark and damp environments are prime conditions for mould and mildew, so using mould-resistant drywall for basement and crawlspace renovations can be a valuable precaution for homeowners. In addition to the 1/2”, mould-resistant drywall also comes in a 5/8” fire-resistant product with options for abuse and impact-resistant material as well. These options allow contractors to ensure their walls are suited for the environment they will face while still meeting all the spec requirements and building codes.
